Whole Earth Catalog

I just watched Steve Jobs' speech for Stanford in 2005. He referred to this publication 'Whole Earth Catalogue'. As i was researching i came across this image. I find it striking and i feel it correlates with my own work.

I find the contrast between different textures and shades of denim really interesting. The play on the hand stitching adds such a raw and organic feel to the jacket. This image from the street, I find to be quite inspiring. The jacket looks like it has been degraded, something I am looking to portray in my own work.

LAST SEMESTER - FINAL PRESENTATION

CUT AND SLASH

Cut and Slash S/S 1991 collection is a really beautiful example of working with denim. Vivienne Westwood explores the 17th Century technique of slashing, giving depth to the fabric. This can be seen in FIG 2. where the jacket is slashed and opened creating new found space and volume. Immediately the garment’s original silhouette of the jacket transforms. The slashes are quite effective and the amount of fraying that is given to the garment enhances a quite decorative technique. Visually and texturally the garment breathes new depth.

SURFACE TEXTURES

Martin Margiela’s approach to design inspired me. Margiela’s first solo exhibition at Museum of Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, in the Netherlands (9/4/1615) inspired me. In the collection each outfit was treated with different strains of bacteria, yeast and mould, all isolated from the air and nurtured to provide varying colours and texture.
